Captain James L. McClane, USN

Captain McClane enlisted in 1964. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned in 1970.

 

His initial assignment was in USS RICHARD E. BYRD (DDG 23) where he served as missile/gunnery assistant, fire control officer and CIC officer until 1973. After postgraduate school and following completion of department head school in 1977, he reported to USS BUCHANAN (DDG 14) as weapons officer. After his tour aboard USS BUCHANAN, Captain McClane was selected as the commissioning combat systems officer for USS TICONDEROGA (CG 47). He participated in the first series of AEGIS training courses at the Combat Systems Engineering Development Site, Moorestown, New Jersey and served on TICONDEROGA from pre-commissioning through the first deployment (1980-1984). This included delivery, commissioning, two operational evaluations and participation in the Multinational Peacekeeping Force off Beirut, Lebanon. Captain McClane served as executive officer of USS BELKNAP (CG 26) from 1984-1986 and assumed command of USS WADDELL (DDG 24) in February 1987. His twenty-seven months in command included two deployments to the Arabian Gulf/North Arabian Sea.

 

Captain McClane then served as senior combat systems member, underway senior inspector and acting senior surface member of the Washington Board of Inspection and Survey from 1989-1991. After joint professional military education, he reported to the United States Atlantic Command in July 1992. His assignments included deputy director for plans and policy (J5A) and chief, cruise missile division (J56). He also organized a headquarters information working group as a step toward establishing a permanent CINCUSACOM information directorate.

 

He is a graduate of the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School (MSEE) and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (1992).

 

Captain McClane commanded USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CG 58) from February 1996 to April 1998. He assumed command of the Afloat Training Group, Atlantic in May 1998.

 

His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and area awards.

 

Captain McClane is married to the former Carol Lynn Prodanovich of San Diego. They reside in Virginia Beach with their sons John and Michael.

Thanks for the e-mail and I'll be sure and visit the site.  I was not the ast USN CO of the warship, I was relieved by CDR Robert Smith in April 1989 as I recall--I don't know where he is.  I think he decommissioned the ship.


The last time I saw WADDELL was in Nov 1996 at Souda Bay, Crete.  She was in commission in the Greek Navy and moored alongside my first ship ex-USS Richard E. Byrd (DDG 23).  ex-BYRD was serving as a spare parts locker for ex-WADDELL.  I was CO of USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CG58) at the time and deployed
to the Med.  I had the opportunity to meet the first Greek CO of our ship at that time.

Decommissioned ships normally send historical materials to the Washington Navy Yard, I believe.
