down the ways at the Seattle Division, Todd Shipyards Corporation, on
Tuesday, 26 February 1963. Sponsored by Mrs. Howard W. Cannon, wife of
Nevada U.S. Senator Howard W. Cannon (D), the Waddell is the fourth guided
missile destroyer to be built by the Seattle firm. |

The US Navy’s newest guided missile destroyer, USS Waddell,
23rd of her class and fourth to be built by Todd Shipyards
Corporation’s Seattle Division, in readiness at her berth, prior to being
christened and launched on February 16, 1963. Mrs. Howard Cannon, wife of
the senator from Nevada, was her sponsor. The vessel carries the name of
James Iredell Waddell, storied "sea raider" of the American Confederacy. |
